They are trying to create another safe area for the eastern lowland gorilla in the Itomtbwe Forest, south of Kahuzi-Biega National Park. They are conducting studies and engaging with local villages and traditional authorities to determine the best way to protect them. World Wildlife Fund works to designate gorilla sanctuaries, such as in Congo.
